You can safely call the 1970's through the 1990's the magnetic tape era. Cassette tapes came into popularity first (1/8" magnetic tape) as a cheap consumer way to distribute audio (and record too). Followed closely by VHS tape (1/2" magnetic tape) which was obviously bigger to carry the bigger signal of both audio and video. It also came with the easy convenience of being able to record - right over your saved copy of Ghostbusters you duped off HBO. Nowadays, everything is digital, and no one uses magnetic tape anymore.
