Tribute to Elwood Edwards
Knowing full well this may be the tipping point where my blog hosts more mentions of passings than births, I'd be neglect if I didn't give a shout out to the man who welcomed me to the very early internet back in the early 1990's: Elwood Edwards, who passed earlier this month on Nov. 5, 2024. At one point they said his voice was heard more than 35 million times a day... as the 'You've Got Mail!' voice that started every AOL dial-up connection! (Now it should be 'You've Got Spam...again!')
My source for these files is this old AOL Sucks website that hosts them as downloadable WAV files (blech!), but if you want to hear a bit more from Elwood, John Graham-Cumming has a few other recordings that he paid for that you can listen to as well.. Below are single-click players that let you listen to Elwood once again, saying.... other stuff!
You've Got Credit Card Debt!
You Want Fries With That?
Oy, Gevalt
Spoon! (Wavering)
Stop touching me!
Whatever (Valley Girl Accent)
Why did you do that?
Yeah, Right
Do not panic
The New York Times (Paywall) has the full obituary of this mild mannered legend. You can download the original WAV audio files or the MP3 Audio as a single ZIP file for your archives or tributes.
