With the longest possible turnaround, I have posted photo gallery from September 2nd's Hang Free, as well as the DJ sets from that same Monday.
Mad thanks go out to Nick, Chuck D, Imri and Rob Paine for thier time and effort.
Next up: Editting the Summer 2002 Hang Free Video which will be posted on this site as well.
Updated Wednesday September 4th, 2002 - 6:00 PM
The weather held out - no rain, and even a bit of sunshine. Mad apologies to anyone who wrongly showed up at Silk City - it was still drizzling and the weather had predicted it would rain until late morning when I posted the update Sunday late night. Hang Free is meant to be outdoors.
Monday was a lovely warm day, with a bit of hacky-scaking and frisbee tossing. The DJ Lineup included Nick, Chuck D, Under, Imri and Rob Paine.
We're working on digitizing the DJ Sets and we'll post them as MP3 files. I have to finish writing the captions for the photos I took, and hopefully I can finish editting the Hang Free 2002 Video (which will also be posted online).
Stacy and I had a great time, and will hopefully try to sneak another Hang Free in before the end of the year. As always, this web site is the central repository of all info regarding Hang Free, and is posted as often as allows. Sign up on the mailing list in order to recieve a one-time announcement about each upcoming Hang Free (after the initial announcement, all information is distributed via this site).
Updated Monday September 2nd, 2002 - 12:00 NOON
The skies have cleared, and it looks like we'll be in Fairmount Park today. We'll be up and running by 2pm. Directions are below. I'd suggest bringing a blanket (and/or a tarp) with your picnic lunch.
Since today is a national holiday, and therefore West River Drive will be open to traffic all day.
Leaving Center city, go down West River Drive past BOTH lights, and just after you go under the Strawberry Mansion bridge, we're on the left in the large grassy field. This is about a half-mile back from Fells Bridge. If you drive, there is parking in two lots (on the left and right sides) just ahead, one in front of the West River Drive Pavillion, and the other just across the street.
Updated Sunday September 2nd, 2002 - 3:00 AM
The weather has not been kind to the Philadelphia area this weekend. Non-stop rain has saturated this area, and hopefully, will subside sometime tomorrow, but the ground will still be sopping wet and no fun to sit on.
Thanks to our good friend MG, we've found an alternate location for Hang Free this Labor Day Monday - Silk City. We'll be there with our booked DJ's from 2pm to 8pm (and possibly later - I don't know yet...), the cost is still free, and this time, bring your kind selves (no frisbees, or volleyball - boo hoo!) to Silk City (5th & Spring Garden), and start drinking early!
Unless the ground dries dramatically by tomorrow afternoon, and everything works out, expect to find us at Silk City instead of in Fairmount Park. We hate to move it indoors, but the weather does not want to cooperate with us this holiday weekend!
As always, I've overbooked the line-up, so we'll see who spins, and who doesn't. Call my cell at 267-918-3339 if you need to hear it from me in person.

Updated Friday August 30th, 2002 - 2:00 PM
The weather does not look good, with a 40% chance of rain, and isolated thunderstorms predicted. It will be a nice 80 degrees for Monday, but as always, continually check this site for up-to-the-minute weather updates.
Currently booked to spin is the Solomonic Sound System of Rob Paine and Zach, along with Archedream.com's Glenn, Anthrum.com's MG, and (hopefully) Reflective.net's Imri. (Sounds a bit of internet bookings?)
Updated Wednesday August 28th, 2002 - 6:00 PM
Hello everyone! I hope everyone had a great summer, for we're wrapping this summer with a Hang Free on Monday, Sept. 2nd (Labor Day). You should have off, and unless you're down the shore, we expect you at Hang Free!
The DJ lineup (as always) is undergoing development, and we're always open for suggestions. Check back for the full line-up as Monday approaches, as well as up-to-date information and possible weather delays.
No surprise to the regulars, the location is the same we've had it all year, so if you've been to one, you know where to go! Since West River Drive will be open to traffic, we expect everyone to show up early! We will be up and running by 2pm (and probably earlier), going until dark.
Updated Tuesday July 9th, 2002 - 3:00 PM
Somehow, yesterday I found time to record and re-compress the DJ sets from Sunday. (It's a slow work week).
We have Linda Leigh's 68 minute illbient set, Lee Jones 71 minute deep house set, and finally Big Daddy Blake's 75 minute house set. All are 64kbps Stereo MP3 files - for faster downloading!
Updated Monday July 8th, 2002 - 3:30 PM
Another great Hang Free is over, and we're in the midst of digitizing content. I have the photos up from yesterday.
Meanwhile check back as we put up the DJ sets from the day in MP3 format. Linda Leigh had an excellent illbient set, last-minute fill-in DJ Lee Jones spun deep house, and Big Daddy Blake rocked a house set as well. We only recorded 30 minutes of Under's funky set before the generator ran out of gas.
So bookmark this site and check back. We'll hopefully have the MP3 files up in about a week. Next planned Hang Free will be in early August (sign up on our email list to recieve occasional emails about Hang Free events), and the final Hang Free of the season (might) be on Labor Day Monday.

Still waiting on the caravan of cars to get the equipment out to the spot. Hopefully we'll be up and running by 2:30pm! - Under
Updated Saturday July 6th, 2002 - 11:30 PM
The heat wave broke! The weather has a 0% chance of rain, and a nice 88 degrees for Sunday. We're sure to be set up and running by 1pm, we're bringing our (tiny) grill, the volleyball net, and more!
Finally locked down, DJing will be Linda Leigh, Imri, Big Daddy Blake, Eörs, and ever-present Under.
Philadelphia Police close West River Drive to traffic from Noon until 5pm Saturdays & Sundays during the summer. This prevents most folk from driving out to Hang Free, since it's a 4-mile hike from Center City. We suggest you Blade, Bike or Walk.
Insist on driving before 5pm? Use the 'Montgomery Drive/West River Drive' exit off 76 (Exit 35), and head down toward West River Drive. A park ranger will stop you at the gate. Explain your predicament ("My wheelchair get's stuck in the mud!"), and they should let you though. Drive slow (under 15 MPH), and avoid all pedestrians/bikers/rollerbladers. Follow the old-fashioned directions above.
Updated Monday, July 1st, 2002 - 4:00 PM
This week is sure to be hectic, with Fourth of July, and an especially long summer weekend, but why not finish your weekend by hanging out in Fairmount Park with the Hang Free crew!
Currently booked to spin is Linda Leigh, Imri, Big Daddy Blake, Eörs and (hopefully - we haven't confirmed it yet) Marc Coleman. Ever-present will be super-promoters Sugarplum Stacy & Under.
It's tough to say at this early date, but the weather looks a promising (not-too-hot) 88 degrees for Sunday.
Updated Monday, June 17th, 2002 - 9:00 PM
Since the last update, A couple Hang Free attendee's pictures happened my way, so I posted 2 new photo galleries!
On May 5th, Jamey Ellis took a bunch of slides we had scanned in (BTW, Jamey, email me if you see this! I have to return them to you!).
On May 27th, long-time Hang Free supporter Heather Warner shared her pictures with us as well.
We've also put up the DJ sets from last May 27th. We have Anton Chasm's 75 minute Funky Break set, Jon Gill's 58 minute House set, the unfortunatly short (30 minute) deep house set from Candaian import Jojo Flores. All this before the rain came, and drove everyone away.
Next Hang Free is tentatively dated for Sunday, July 7th, 2002. Check back as we get closer to that date!
Updated Thursday, May 30th, 2002 - 9:00 PM
After a bit of husting and coding, I've put up my very meager pictures from Monday's Hang Free (Sorry, I didn't take enough this time!).
Also, the captions work on the picture gallery from the last Hang Free
Still working on digitizing and compressing the DJ Sets, but they'll be up soon!
Updated Tuesday, May 28th, 2002 - 4:00 PM
What a great day. The thunderstorm held off until 7pm, and lasted a whopping 15 minutes. That's enough to send most people hustling home. Nonetheless, we'll be putting up Anton Chasm's set, along with Jon Gill, and Jojo Flores abruptly shortened set. Also, I'll put up the pictures I did take as soon as possible. Thanks for coming out!
Updated Monday, May 27th, 2002 - 2:50 PM
We're heading out. This 'supposed' thunderstorm is still not showing up, and we want to go outside. See you there. Call Under's call phone if you need to ensure where we're set up (267) 918-3339. Directions are to the right and at the bottom.
Updated Monday, May 27th, 2002 - 12:30 PM
Still debating whether or not to have Hang Free today. With a 60% chance of thunderstorms in an hour, we don't want to be caught outdoors with power cords and generators. Check back as we are officially delaying the start of Hang Free. If we do have it today, we will begin after 2pm! Meanwhile, sit tight folks! - Under

Wow, what a great day. We've put up pictures from sunday's Hang Free, but while we work on the code, the captions aren't working yet.
Menawhile, we're hard at work digitizing the sets we recorded. Many thanks to Matt Brownell, Frank Scott, Bill Gat, Keith and Applejack for spinning. Check back in a couple more days to see if we've put them up.
Updated Saturday, May 4th, 2002 - 4:00 PM
With the weather looking a promising 65 degrees tomorrow, Stacy and I are anxiously awaiting the seasons first Hang Free to commence.
Our guest DJ's this Cinco de Mayo will be the entire Mask & Wig Crew of Bill Gat, Guy (Jack Trip), and Keith. Also joining us for the first time will be U of P regulars Matt Brownell and Frank Scott. Finally, wrapping up the lineup will be our old friend Applejack and the ever-present Under.

Updated Friday, April 26th, 2002 - 8:00 PM
With the rush of new, spring(and summer)-like weather, Stacy and I have decided to bump up the yearly schedule, and have an early Hang Free this year.
We have our permit for Sunday, May 5th (Cinco de Mayo for you spanish speakers...) Same bat-location as most of last-years events, so check back for maps and directions a bit later (gotta dig up those files!)
I've already selected a couple of guest DJ's, but we're always up for suggestions. Join the email list right away for updates (that's how we do it in Y2K2), or keep your eyes peeped for tiny flyers we might hand out here and there (the email thing is the best, notice a trend?).
Problems? Questions? Email me. Meanwhile, keep hoping for good weather.
Updated Sunday, January 20th, 2002
We've archived last years site (as well as for 2000 and 1999 - all of which have links to pictures of the events), and are preparing for yet another year of Hang Free events. Check back in the spring for more info. Our first event should be on Memorial Day, 2002.
Problems? Questions? Want to spin? Want to come? Can't figure out who to write to? Email Under with any issues with this site.
